Take Digital Photographs
Sure the camera itself can cost you as cheaply as $50 or as much as $1000. I bought a Cannon camera for $129 and have never regretted it since. It goes with me on every vacation, every activity with the kids, and every day trip. I have taken so many great pictures, and the ones that weren't so great I can delete them immediately. You'd be surprised as to how much better of a photographer you will become by taking many many photos. Just make sure you buy a large enough memory card (or stick) to hold the hundreds of photos you are going to take. The card that comes with the camera will never hold enough to make you happy, but it does act as a good back up.
Help Your Community
For nine years I volunteered my time in a local youth sports organization. I spent five of those years as the organization's president. It was without a doubt one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. The only thing it cost me was my time, unless you count the $10 for the shirt I bought with the organization's name on it. If you have the time and desire to help others, find an organization in your area to help. You can serve food at the local soup kitchen, to helping with the Red Cross, to anything in between. Get out there and help, your area needs you.

I took a poll at the end of our last lesson together - I asked my students what their favourite hobby was? Someone said 'football' (that's 'soccer' to our cousins across the Atlantic!), which we decided would be the theme for the next lesson. Their 'homework' was to bring something football related to this lesson. I arrived with all my Sunderland memorabilia - scarf, hat, coat and so on. This is how the lesson went:
1. Greetings! Usual warm up exercise of greeting one another. For a more advanced class I usually include a 'family news' section at the beginning, which is an opportunity to share with the class anything of significance that's happened between lesson. I will then talk for five minutes or so about the team I am passionate about.
2. Responses: here's where we find out who likes football, and why they think my choice of team is the wrong one. I will start asking questions of the students. Depending on their skill level we can talk about everything from colours to home towns, club history to current form.
3. Video: we will watch a section of a recent match on the TV together, and I will encourage more comment and discussion from the clip. We will brainstorm soccer vocabulary, and write new words on the board.
4. If this was a one-to-one course, we would probably follow up the lesson with a real enthusiast with a visit to see a match. Teaching into people's enthusiasm is by far and away the best method of getting a language across - the student will be searching for new words for a subject that has fully engaged him or her!
5. Quiz: set a brief observation quiz (5-10 questions) about the video, using simple written answers to questions arising: 'which number player scored the goal?; what colour shirt was the referee wearing? Get the person sitting to the left or right of each student to mark his or her colleague's paper. Small chocolate based prizes all round!
6. As with every group lesson, end with feedback (from the student to the teacher) and farewell.
This kind of plan works well for any hobby / pastime / enthusiasm: engage the student, illustrate well, and, as the teacher, mostly sit back and listen.

Relevancy is the key
You might have an amazing passion for knitting, but does it have anything to do with your vocation? If it does and you happen to be a trainee fashion designer for example, then go for it! But remember the thing to avoid at all costs is any irrelevant hobbies that just fill space and don't actually support your CV. Remember this isn't your Facebook bio, it's your CV- the aim of which is to secure your dream job. So be ruthless and even though your hobbies might be great, it might not be something your employer needs to know.
This is not to say that all hobbies and interests don't belong on your CV. A lot of hobbies have transferable skills which could reinforce your suitability for the position.
For example, being the coach of your child's football team highlights your ability to manage a team and excel in a leadership role.
Running a book club emphasizes a keen passion for literature and your ability for creative thought and organization.
If you are applying for a job in an active environment, then showing off your sporting passions will not be out of place on your CV.
Achievements
Don't be modest about any achievements you may have in a professional, sporting or skill based capacity. This shows passion, enthusiasm and talent, which are all great qualities. Boasting about winning the class spelling bee in primary school is not quite what I have in mind here- keep it relatively recent!!
What NOT Write
Not everyone is going to have an exciting array of hobbies and interests to list on their CV- but don't worry, it is probably best to leave this section out altogether than make the following mistakes...
"I like to socialize/ I enjoy going out with my friends"- OK, so points for not being a recluse, but in the working world it's about as useless as writing that you enjoy 3 square meals a day.
"I enjoy going to the cinema"- you may do, or you might enjoy long walks in the park or collecting stamps, but does this help the employer see why they should employ you? This kind of info might be more appropriate on a personal ad than on your CV, so have a good think about the relevance of what you put down.
Any kind of lie is not a good idea- if you put that you are a keen scuba diver and have never touched a flipper in your life, then this is just over-padding and pointless. You need to ensure, like with any part of your CV, that if an employer asks you about it in more depth, you know what you are talking about. The last thing you'd want is to find out that your interviewer is also a passionate scuba diver- but a real one- you could find yourself in a very uncomfortable situation!!

Your resume and CV would have one sub-point reserved for 'Hobbies'. Have you wondered why? Hobbies would often tell the employer what type of a person you are - happy, creative, intense, extrovert, introvert and so on; it would also indicate whether you allow creativity a free hand - a thing that is extremely important in personal and professional growth no matter what field you choose for yourself.

People who are normally forced into "successful" and demanding professions often choose to give up their hobbies or leisure time in order to further their career. Leading psychiatrists are of the opinion that hobbies and leisure time occupations such as watching TV, gossiping with neighbors, walking in a park, learning a new language and so on, actually help your mind and body to de-stress. The process is simple - when you do something you love, your mind would shut off the problems that worry you and revel in the pleasure generated by the activity you enjoy. When your mind is off problems, your body relaxes and your mind is able to think with more clarity. This means you short-circuit an impending anxiety attack and are very likely to find a solution to your problems. Isn't that called a win-win situation?
Some people know what gives them pleasure to do - and cultivate this activity as a hobby or leisure time occupation. What about people who are undecided about what they would really like to do? If you are surprised at this, don't. There are many people out there who have never thought about it hard enough to identify what they would like to do for pleasure. Well, finding out is easy. Ask yourself this question, 'If I had all the money in the world and did not have to work for a living, what work would give me the most pleasure?' Do not look for one answer - because there would be many swimming in your mind and if you are looking for one answer you would be disappointed enough to stop searching.
Make a list of all the possibilities that pop up in your mind. Stop when you reach at reach at 20. Keep the list where you can see it every day. Give yourself a month to identify what you love to do. In the meantime, take out the list everyday and add or delete suggestions from it, aiming to narrow it down to 10 favorite activities - if you can reduce to less it would be even better. Once you have a list of 10 items prioritize these in order of your preference, the best one first. Now, the list would be do-able. Establish a time at least once a week where you would take up one or more of the activities on your list. Keep doing this until you identify what gives you the most pleasure among them all. Please keep in mind that you could choose more than one hobby.
Here are some examples of creative and fun-filled hobbies:
1. Photography
2. Creative writing - poems, snippets, how-to books, short stories, chicken-soup stuff, memoirs
3. Painting/ learning to paint
4. Drawing cartoons/ animation/ sketching
5. Model building - ships, airplanes, cars, buildings, and the like
6. Traveling to see the world
7. Traveling to learn about different customs and people
8. Historical traveling
9. Traveling to discover the taste of the world - for food lovers
10. Cooking/ baking
11. Stitching/ embroidering/ tailoring
12. Swimming/ skiing/ ice-skating/ any outdoor sport you love
13. Indoor sports - chess, carom, bowling, table tennis, billiards
14. Chatting on the Net
15. Surfing the Net
16. Singing/ playing an instrument/ learning to sing or play an instrument
17. Woodworking/ carpentry
18. Mechanic work/ working on cars, motorcycles
19. Horse riding
20. Training animals
These are only a handful of things you could do. The list is endless. You need to allow yourself enough time to identify the one or two activities that give you the most pleasure. Once you found it out, pour in all efforts to make it a full-time hobby. Ensure that every weekend you have a couple of hours reserved for your 'battery re-charging time' when you indulge in your pleasure.
You will find that as you channel your creativity into the chosen hobby(ies) you would feel more relaxed, tolerant of your mistakes and those of others, slower to anger and worry, and more productive. This is because when you are happy, your brain actually works more effectively. As you cannot cry and laugh at the same time, so you would not be able to feel anxious and relaxed at the same time. As your hobby would take root and you discover yourself through it, you would find that your anxiety or panic attacks become lesser and lesser both in intensity and number.

For many, retirement is about creating a new life. With so many options and opportunities, many people feel lost and don't know where to start. Here's a simple exercise to help figure out what a "meaningful activity" would look like.
Take eight to twelve pieces of paper and think of activities during which you have felt engaged and was meaningful. These are activities where you lost all sense of time. You enjoyed what your were doing, but felt challenged. You were proud of the results when it was complete. Think back to school, hobbies, extra curricular activities, work, home, community, or church. Write them down, and then answer the following five questions for each activity.
Jeff recently retired and took on an activity most people wouldn't dream. He's building a plane from scratch. When he answered the following questions, it became clear why this was a perfect choice for him. Your activities may not be as involved, but the important thing is how you felt when you were engaged.
1. What five or six traits did I get to use while engaged in this activity?
For example, Jeff, who listed building a plane as one of his activities, wrote that this activity allowed him to be handy, analytical, methodical, practical, and observant.
2. What passions/interests did the activity meet?
For Jeff, it was working with his hands, risk-taking, being outdoors, solving complex problems, and the feeling of adventure.
3. What skills/talents did you get to use?
Jeff listed hand-eye coordination, physical strength, synthesizing information, visualizing, planning, and organizing.
4. What goals/purpose did the activity have?
Jeff's goal was to build a plane he could fly.
5. What was the goal of the experience?
For Jeff, it was the workmanship of creating a tangible product and creative expression.
Once all of the questions are answered, lay the papers on the floor in front of you and look at what the recurring themes are in the different activities. This should give you some idea about what activities you enjoy. By identifying the traits, skills, interests, and values that matter, retirees will be closer to discovering activities that not only bring them pleasure, but feed their soul as well.
